Educating Champions of a Sustainable World at Copenhagen International School

Copenhagen International School (CIS) continues to advance its commitment to sustainability through impactful, student-centered initiatives. One notable example is the ongoing project led by the Green Wave group, which has launched a trial focused on improving food waste management. Initially, this effort has begun in staff rooms, with plans to expand to each grade level floor, ensuring that students develop more conscious habits in food waste disposal.

The Green Wave’s strategy emphasizes active involvement from both students and teachers to foster a collaborative approach while keeping cleaning expenses in check. This integration aims to cultivate a culture of shared responsibility, where everyone plays a role in maintaining sustainable practices.

Looking ahead, the Green Wave’s next objective is to address plastic waste disposal. Current infrastructure limitations, with few dedicated plastic containers mainly situated in the cafeteria or the ground floor “garbage room,” mean that substantial amounts of plastic from staff rooms and student areas end up in general waste bins. The group plans to install more conveniently located bins throughout the school to promote proper plastic disposal.

These efforts at CIS are pivotal for embedding sustainability into daily routines, reinforcing the school’s mission to nurture environmentally conscious students equipped to make lasting, positive impacts.
