Overview

The American International School of Bucharest (AISB) is an international, coeducational day school that offers an educational program from early childhood (two to five-year-olds) through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school was founded in 1962. The school year comprises two semesters extending from late August through mid-June.Curriculum: The school provides an international curriculum in English, suited to meet the needs of the international student community in Bucharest. The school offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma in grades 11-12, the IB Middle Years Program (MYP) in grades 6-10, and the IB Primary Years Program (PYP) in grades EC3-5. In the ELC we draw pedagogical influence from the practices of Reggio Emilia, drawing connections between these Reggio practices and the PYP (IBO).

Specialists in art, drama, film, physical education, music (band/choir), design, computers, Spanish, and French serve students at various grade levels.

In order to provide a sustainable and quality Learning Support program, the school admits a managed number of students with mild to moderate learning and social-emotional/behavioral needs. Our Learning Support specialists work alongside teachers to ensure students receive differentiated instruction, classroom and/or assessment accommodations, modified curriculum (as needed) and make progress towards their individualized learning goals. If students require ongoing 1:1 support, a Learning Intervention Focused Tutor (LIFT) may be arranged at the family’s expense. All students within the Learning Support program have Individualized Learning Plans (ILPs) which document their service delivery program. The school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) and is authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IB) to offer the IB Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma Programs.

Facilities: The school is located on a 10-hectare (28-acre) site north of the city center and opened its doors in the 2001-2002 school year to children in early childhood (three- to four-year-olds) through grade 12. The facility includes spacious classrooms, three library/media centers, three sports centers/gymnasiums, music and art rooms, science and computer laboratories, a performing arts theater, a cafeteria, and many outdoor sports facilities. In August 2017, a new early learning center – a purpose-built facility for two- to five-year-old children – was opened. In August 2019, the secondary school building was extended to accommodate an increased number of students.
