Overview
Cranbrook is a multi-campus Anglican independent day and boarding School for students Pre-School to Year 12. Overlooking Sydney Harbour, Cranbrook School was founded in 1918 as a haven for the pursuit of truth and knowledge.
Inspired by the enduring centrality of the principles of the great liberal traditions of education, we were also the first major Independent School in Sydney to become an IB Continuum School. Our aim as a School is to create a whole individual within a strong academic framework, to prepare our students to voyage out beyond the comfortable with courage and confidence. We value critical thinking and strive to build self-belief for all our students.
Cranbrook school is situated over four campuses; the Senior School (Years 7 to 12) are located on the main campus in suburban Bellevue Hill, while the Junior School, for students from Kindergarten to Year 6, is located in nearby Rose Bay.

Academics
As an International Baccalaureate (IB) World School, Cranbrook’s approach to Teaching and Learning is informed by pedagogical philosophies espoused by the IB. The IB is a global leader in international education, developing inquiring, knowledgeable, confident, and caring young people. Their programmes empower students to take ownership in their own learning and help them develop future-ready skills to make a difference and thrive in a world that changes fast.
Extra curricular
Our Co-Curricular activities usually take place before or after School and there are many different options available for students in Year 1 – Year 6. Apart from our compulsory Sport and Music activities for students in Year 3 – Year 6, we offer up to 55 Co-Curricular activities for students in Year 1 – Year 6. This includes Chess, Mandarin, Code Camp, Debating and Robotics, as well as extensions of the normal curricular offering in certain subject areas, such as French, Music, Art, Drama and Sport.
Cranbrook students are encouraged to develop their talents, interests and skills through participation in physical, academic, scientific and artistic pursuits. Co-Curricular activities help to round-out our students’ education and facilitate their academic studies. Activities include Robotics, Dance, Orchestra, Rock Bands, Debating, Chess, Drama and Public Speaking.
Our Sports programme is wide and varied, and undertaken in a spirit of genuine education. The programme promotes inclusiveness, opportunity and competition. We play sport because it teaches valuable lessons about resilience, challenge, courage, failure and success.
Cranbrook is a member of the Combined Associated Schools (CAS) and involved in the CAS competition on Saturdays. All students at our Cranbrook Senior School are required to play at least one sport in the summer (Terms 1 and 4) and winter seasons (Terms 2 and 3). In addition we hold annual inter-House Athletics and Swimming Carnivals from which students are chosen to represent Cranbrook at higher-level competitions such as the CAS Championships.
With over 14 sports to choose from, whether part of the Co-Curricular programme, or part of the Sport Curriculum, there is something for every Cranbrook student. The flexibility is one of the programme’s greatest strengths, encouraging a deep appreciation and life-long enjoyment of sport.
Boarding
Cranbrook School’s two Boarding Houses – Rawson and Street – are more than just a place to live, they are the beating heart of the School’s community. These two Houses consist of 35-40 boarding students each, alongside a Housemaster and team of Mentors, providing peer and mentor support that fosters the strong sense of belonging that exists within our boarding community.
As a School we are committed to providing an all-encompassing social, co-curricular and academic boarding experience where boarders are supported by a close community, enabling them to grow in confidence and self-belief.
Our goal in providing an unmatchable boarding experience is achieved via our overall structures and individualised interactions. Due to the boutique nature of Cranbrook Boarding, the relationship our boarders develop with their Resident Tutors, Mentors and students is personal and nurturing. There is a warmth towards every student, with their personal wellbeing and development at the heart of the Boarding Community’s purpose.
