Overview

Rangi Ruru is one of Christchurch’s most reputed independent boarding schools for girls, delivering an outstanding academic record for more than 130 years.

Enrolling your daughter at Rangi Ruru is the start of an exciting journey, and our dedicated Enrolments team are here to assist you and your daughter every step of the way. Years 7 & 9 are our two main intake levels, however girls can enrol to start at Rangi Ruru at any year, from Year 7 – 13 as places allow.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School has been providing excellent education to girls from 1889. With an outstanding academic record, Rangi is considered one of the top schools in New Zealand.

Along with academic excellence, we also offer our students quality facilities, excellent teaching staff and small class sizes. We provide a broad curriculum and extensive co-curricular activities including over 40 different sports; a wide range of musical opportunities, speech, drama and dance.

Rangi Ruru has a strong pastoral care and wellbeing network and we are able to offer our international students any additional support they may need while they are in New Zealand. International students may live with a school-approved New Zealand homestay family or in Rangi Ruru’s modern, on-site boarding house (limited places are available).

Our teaching, learning and development programmes are designed to extend girls’ thinking and help them make the most of the opportunities offered to them.

Learning happens everywhere at Rangi. Our teaching and learning programmes, both curricular and co-curricular, are designed to extend girls’ thinking and support them to develop the skills and attributes that will enable them to flourish in their future. We believe in developing the whole girl, while nourishing a growth mindset and empowering our girls to take ownership of their learning.

Academics

Rangi is Christchurch’s only girls’ school offering a true Years 7 to 13 experience, delivering a seamless curriculum by specialist teachers at all year levels. We believe in NCEA because it is a level playing field and a true New Zealand qualification that is well understood offshore.

Rangi is consistently in the top 3% of New Zealand schools for academic achievement. In national and international competitions and examinations, a high proportion of students feature at the top of their chosen fields of endeavour. More than 95% of Rangi girls go on to further tertiary study in New Zealand and overseas, many gaining substantial scholarships as a result of their work at school, and our dedicated Careers and Pathways Strategist who works with each girl one on one.

The New Zealand Curriculum
Rangi Ruru follows the New Zealand Curriculum, which specifies eight learning areas:

  • English
  • The Arts
  • Health and Physical Education
  • Languages
  • Mathematics and Statistics
  • Science
  • Social Sciences
  • Technology

The learning associated with each area is part of a broad, general education and lays a foundation for later specialisation. As with the key competencies, this learning is both end and means; valuable in itself and valuable for the pathways it opens to other learning.

While the learning areas are presented as distinct, this does not limit the ways in which we can structure the learning experiences offered to students. All learning should make use of the natural connections that exist between learning areas and that link learning areas to the values and key competencies.
