Overview
The British School of Brussels (BSB) was founded in 1969 and officially opened in 1970. It has a beautiful site of ten hectares, surrounded by woodlands and lakes near the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Tervuren (20-minutes’ drive from central Brussels). The school is a co-educational non-selective day school for students aged 1-18, with 1,333 currently on roll. 30% of the students are British and there are more than 70 other nationalities represented.
Students follow a British-based curriculum adapted to the European context and international student cohort up to age 16 – (I)GCSE. BSB is the only school in Belgium to offer the choice of three pre-university routes: A Levels, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma (French/Dutch bilingual options) and English BTEC vocational courses in Sport, Business and Hospitality. Additionally, there is a truly bilingual French/English programme for ages 4-14 years.
Our Academic results are amongst the highest of any international school in Europe. Our students achieved a pass rate of 100% in 2020 for the IB diploma, A levels and BTEC. Additionally, BSB achieved the outstanding 38-point average IB score in 2020 and was independently ranked as the number 1 IB Diploma school in Belgium. (2nd in Europe and within the top 50 in the world).
The school has outstanding facilities for Design and Technology, Food & Nutrition and Music and Drama. In 2016 BSB opened its new Sports Centre with a Swimming Pool, International competition standard Gymnasium, Sports Hall and Dance Studio. BSB is the only international school in Belgium to have its own indoor 25m pool. In 2020 the school renewed its outdoor pitches for football, rugby, athletics, tennis and even has installed climbing /bouldering wall.
BSB has a very active parent support network and through “Families of BSB” parents are supported in many ways to help them settle into life in Belgium.

Academics

The British School of Brussels is made up of two schools: the Primary School - ages 1-11 and the Secondary School - ages 11-18.
BSB provides a coherent and holistic curriculum built around our Guiding Statements and underpinned by the UNESCO 4 Pillars: Learning To Know; Learning To Do; Learning To Live Together; and Learning To Become. Tuition is mainly in English, although bilingual learning is also offered in French, along with support for other mother-tongue languages throughout the school.
Students take the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) and the International General Certificate of Secondary Education examinations (IGCSE) at age 16. Students can also take an International BTEC (a vocational qualification awarded by the Business and Technology Education Council in the UK) at Level 2 in Business. BSB students are entered for the IGCSE Science (Double Award) or IGCSE Science (Single Award) exam and are taught by subject specialists for each of the components.
They then choose to study for the General Certificate of Education Advanced Level, the International Baccalaureate Diploma, or International BTEC Level 3. Some students combine A Levels with Level 3 International BTEC. Students study for these in “Post16” – the last two years of education at BSB.
Most students studying A Level and/or International BTEC will also complete an EPQ (Extended Project Qualification). The expectation is that students will begin three A Levels/Level 3 International BTEC and complete them over two years. A small number will begin four. We do not offer AS Levels as a stand-alone qualification.
Extra curricular

The Enrichment programme at BSB is an integral part of school life as part of a holistic curriculum. Students engage in a diverse range of activities including sport, drama and music, all supported by state-of-the-art facilities. Football, gymnastics and swimming are priority sports and full-time professional coaches support and guide students at different levels that range from participation for fun to high level competition both in Belgium and across Europe. Netball, tennis, golf and basketball are also played competitively in local leagues in Belgium and with other international schools. BSB is the only international school in Belgium to have its own 25m indoor swimming pool which forms part of an extensive sports complex that also includes a multi-purpose sports hall, specialist gymnastics space, dance studio, fitness room bouldering wall and 5G artificial pitches. Music and drama opportunities are exceptional across the age range and benefit from specialist rehearsal spaces and a fully functioning Theatre. Two full theatre productions are produced each year alongside a busy programme of music competitions and performances. Many students also take part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme at all levels. This is complemented by an extensive range of CAS activities and a wide variety of curricular and extra-curricular trips and residential visits. Activities such as THIMUN (The Hague Model United Nations), Belgian Special Olympics, Fair Trade and a range of environmental projects through our GIN (Global Issues Network) group enable BSB students to actively develop leadership skills and to engage actively, ethically and purposefully with the wider world.
